Ashwaganda is one of the ten primary adaptogens. It's an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, nervine, antispasmodic, immune amphoteric and mild diuretic tonic.

  • Immune amphoteric: helps to regulate the immune system, helping to balance immune function rather than simply stimulating it.
  • Nervine: helps to balance and calm the central nervous system
  • Diuretic: cleanses the kidneys by promoting urine production

Benefits: Ashwaganda is reputed to promote good health and longevity. A rejuvenating tonic, it also has the benefits of relieving pain caused by inflammation and anxiety, i.e digestive issues caused by stress. It has been proven to benefit cognitive function and memory, and has also been known to calm hyperactivity, especially mentally. It is also utilised for pain relief, reducing joint pain and generalised swelling. It is also suggested to have anti-diabetic affects, reducing blood sugar, and can be a valuable aid when cutting out refined sugar intake. It can also be utilised for its ability to balance weight loss and muscle strength.

Numerous studies have shown positive results in immune cell function, as ashwaganda is resistant to many types of virus and bacteria. It also has antiviral, antimicrobial, and anti-fungal properties. As a nervine and tonic with a high antioxidant capability, its ability to combat the effects of stress, both emotional and oxidative are extremely positive. It can aid:

  • insomnia
  • nervous tension
  • anxiety
  • healthy cellular regeneration

For men it has shown a positive ability to boost fertility, improving testosterone levels.

How to use
Regular use of ashwaganda is advised over a reasonable period to harness the best benefits, at least two or three times a week for at least six to eight weeks – intermittently heightening the dose and then decreasing it once your body starts to show alignment with its benefits. Excessive prolonged use of any natural remedy will simply reduce its efficacy as your body becomes accustomed to its presence. In powder form it can be added to smoothies, porridge, plant milk lattes, even hot drinks providing it is never boiled. It can even be sprinkled on granola or muesli.

PLEASE NOTE As with all natural remedies please do check the contraindications of any over the counter medicine you may be taking. Ashwaganda is an immunostimulant so may pose issues with auto immune deficiency medication. It is also a mild sedative so should not be used with any other sedative medication as it may cause drowsiness in sensitive people. It may also increase thyroid production.
